Aug. 8th: Dennis vs. The Pineapple

"So...Yeah."

"This -- This is a pineapple. I have no idea what it's doing here."

"Screw this, I'm gonna see if there's any more fortune cookies laying around."

Aug. 7th: GetGlue Stickers Entry

Hello, my name is Galileo, and...I'm a GetGlue Addict.

"Hi, Galileo," the unseen group would drone to me.

Why, what's GetGlue, you ask? Lemme see if I can describe exactly what this is to you.

It's a social networking site...kind of. But what this site specializes in is tracking every activity that you do in a day. No, not like the "install a bug that takes your personal information and sells them to third party spambots in China" business model that places like Facebook does, nor does it track every stupid statement that you type down for all the world to see like Twitter does.

No, what GetGlue does is it tracks every TV show or movie you watch, anyone you listen to, any books you read, etc. I found the site through people on Twitter saying they're currently watching (insert show here) or (watching just-released movie here). So I naturally assumed that it was a bootlegging site.

Oh, how wrong I was. See, what you do is go to the main GetGlue site. Then, you find whatever it is that you're doing. In this case, let's say The Simpsons. Then there's a comment box, where you "check in" to that topic.

And when I checked-in for the first time, I though that's how you were able to watch things. NOPE. It only tells other people that you're watching it. But here's what I did learn: If you check into something frequently (5, 15, 50, 100) times, or you check into a single show or a set of shows at the right time, you earn a sticker.

This is the "Jump The Shark" sticker, earned by checking-in to a show that's overstayed its welcome.

Yes, a sticker. Let's say you watch the Simpsons 5 days a week, and you check in each of those days. Doing so will earn you the Simpsons Fan sticker.

You get this one for 5 check-ins.

And so on, and so forth. So you get to thinking "if this show gave me a sticker, I wonder what other ones will?" Well, if the show/movie/whatever is popular or new, chances are that there's at least one sticker for it. Some, like the infamous Shark Week, not only has a sticker for each of the seven shows that premiered last week, but stickers for how many times you check into it (5, 10, and 15), ones for checking in on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and even a sticker for each of the 4 weeks counting down to it. It gives you a grand total of seventeen stickers.

And I have them all! Hahahaha!

What do these things do? Well, nothing. They're purely cosmetic! But earning as many of these things as quickly as possible (as the window for obtaining many of these stickers lasts for about a day or so), can get addicting. My grand total as of this writing is 325...and growing. I've been at this for nearly 6 months or so, but then there's some people who have just about EVERY sticker thus far. We call them...people with less of a life than I do.

Also, if you get at least 20, you can get physical copies of them mailed to you. So if you're interested in joining the fold...get cracking! Join us...join us...join us...

Sorry, that button gets stuck sometimes.

Aug. 6th: George & Huck

So, I've been watching that Boomerang channel this past week. If you don't know, it's a cable channel that reruns nothing but old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, plus a few of the old Cartoon Cartoon series from the 90's.

In short, it's the Cartoon Network from my childhood, and it's become the Best Channel Ever™. But as I was saying, I started to notice something.

Doesn't George Jetson

Look like the human version of Huckleberry hound?

Or how George and Astro look so much alike?

It's all in the face, really. Now there's a theory of evolution that Bill & Joe probably never thought of. Your mind is now blown. You're welcome.

So, that job I went into that interview for?

Yeah, turns out I didn't get it.

I'm just a little sad now, but things'll get better soon.

I hope. I'll have something better for you guys tomorrow. Just don't feel like it right now.

Aug. 4th: Dennis & The Fortune Cookie

Hey, a fortune cookie! Lemme just open it, here...

Now to blast it open. The one time I regret not having any hands...

Phew. Well, that took forever. Let's see what it says.

"Opportunity is knocking at your front door."

The hell? I can't even add "in bed" to this.

THE END!

Aug. 3rd: Unemployment: America's Greatest Pastime

I haven't discussed much of my personal life recently, which is a shame. For most of the time I've been blogging here, my life has been pretty dull, aside from the stuff I've put here. But for the past month, I've been out of a job.

Yes folks, I am currently unemployed and out of my old job that I hated with a passion. Just in case someone from said job or anyone professional who's reading this entry right now, I'll just call it The Place. The Place was just not pleasant to be at.

You've seen the movie Clerks, right? Imagine that, but repeating every day for five years. Sometimes some days would feel like Clerks II, sometimes like the Animated Series. But either way, it eventually got to me and hit the breaking point in late June. What happened, exactly? I'd rather not talk about that, I don't wish to live in the past right now. But in the month since that's happened, I've been treating this unemployment thing like a vacation, and I feel 1000x better than I've been in quite a while! But not having a job is starting to suck. I like money, and I don't have a constant stream anymore.

But I went for a job interview today, and I think it went rather well. I'll give y'all an update if I get the job!

So that's what's been happening with me. How about you? Until next time, here's a lemon:

Aug. 1st: The Blog-A-Day Project

I know, I know, I've been slacking on the blog posts here for the past...year. What was once a living, breathing blog had withered into a husk that's updated on the last day of every month.

But today I change all of that. I hereby announce the Blog-A-Day Project. For the rest of the month, I'll post something here. It could be about anything. Stuff about my personal life, a movie I just saw, a video that I thought was funny, a new Soundtracks For Summer entry, etc. Anything that gets my creativity pumping and putting asses in the seats...of your chairs that read this on your computer.

So...what's on my mind today? Well, this past Friday I discovered that my TV now carries channels like Boomerang and The Hub thanks to switching my cable to IO! I can finally watch stuff like Transformers: Prime, Dan Vs., and all of the old shows that Cartoon Network doesn't show anymore! Yep, totally not watching that new My Little Pony show.

What? What have you heard? Ah, it's probably nothing. As for Boomerang, I caught The Banana Splits show for the first time in ages.

RIP Snorky

Around the midway point of the episode, I saw this for the first time:

Something called "Hold The Bus." Let me describe the set up the best I can: There's a puppet bird in the Banana Splits' Cuckoo Clock, and at one point it pops out and shouts "HOLD THE BUS!" Then the gang spends the next minute running around their set, yelling "HOLD THE BUS!" Then it cuts to the above video, a cop directing traffic while funk music plays in the background.

And that's it, they move on to the next segment. There's no bus. What the hell just happened? What was the point of that? I think I do know: It was the powerful mindscrew that resulted when combining Sid & Marty Krofft with mid-60s Hanna-Barbera. Some powerful, powerful stuff that shouldn't be taken lightly. Clearly, this show serves as a warning for all the naysayers who think that this stuff is harmless.

Soundtracks For Summer: Steal Away

Part 22 in my ongoing "Soundtracks For Summer" series.

Hey folks, last I checked, it's still summer! So you know what that means: Another entry where I blab about a song that reminds me of summer!

Today's song is Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away."

Ah, 1980, such a year to begin a new decade. A feeling of malaise was spreading as the 1970's came to a close, the Keytar won't be invented for another couple of years, and a soothing sound was needed to fill the void. A sound that would tell us "hey, relax."

This is, again, one of those songs that plays in your head when you're relaxing by the pool with some sort of colorful drink with that little umbrella think resting in it. For me, it's a song that reminds me of the time when I was sitting on the porch of a Days Inn in Virginia watching Tropical Storm Gaston (yes, Gaston) pound away at the landscape. Everything around us was getting soaked and battered apart by the wind and rain...except for me. Completely awesome.

Also of note is that this is one of those songs that Jimmy Fallon refers to as "Yacht Rock." As in, soft rock songs such as this one that you listen to on a fancy yacht while drinking champagne and telling your loser friends that you're on a boat, and such.

Another notable "Yacht Rock" song, according to Jimmy is Christopher's Cross' "Ride Like The Wind."

Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself by showing that one. Oh well, either way, I'll see you folks next time!

BTW, I'm also taking reader submissions for future "Soundtracks For Summer" entries. If you've got an idea, pop me an email at beamingforbunnies@gmail.com OR comment on this entry OR at the Facebook Fan Page with the name of the song, and a reason or two why it defines "Summer" for you. You'll be glad you did.

Soundtracks For Summer: Octopus's Garden

Part 21 in my ongoing "Soundtracks For Summer" series.

Once again, I apologize with the lack of entries as of late. I've been kinda depressed as of late, hit a rough patch with my life. But while I was on a drive yesterday, I saw the following next to me on the highway:

-A 50s era car, don't know the exact model, but it looked old.
-It was colored baby-blue, so shiny that it looked like it just rolled off the assembly line.
-There was no cover, so it looked like Ricky Ricardo's car from those I Love Lucy episodes where the gang drove to Hollywood.

I thought the backdrop was the studio set. Turned out it's supposed to be the Golden Gate Bridge...
Also:
-Old man driving the car.
-He was wearing a straw fedora, which he was holding onto with one hand while he drove.

If THAT doesn't define "summer," then I don't know what will. So this sounds like a fine opportunity to start up Year Four of my Soundtracks For Summer series.

For those of you not familiar with this, it's a series of blog entries where I write about songs that define "summer" to me. So with that little bit of exposition out of the way, why don't we play a tune by the Beatles?

Sure, "Octopus's Garden" is about the 867th thing that your mind would go to if someone mentioned the word "Beatles", but what's a better mouthpiece for this song than some podunk blog that updates once a month?

So why is this a great summer song? Is it because this is one of only two Beatles songs that Ringo got to write? No, but I can imagine months of Ringo repeating "Can I have a song now?" before the band finally relented. I'm pretty sure that's how Ringo gets lots of things: Food, clothes, the job as Mr. Conductor on Shining Time Station.

No, this song, with lyrics as strange as they are, just seems mellow enough to relax me. What is the song REALLY about? Hell if I know, but what I do know is that this underwater fantasy is genuinely more mellow than the folks who think they're mellow like Bruno Mars, Jason Mraz, and, ugh, Dave Matthews. Just rich white guys (and whatever Bruno Mars is) without problems strumming acoustic guitars like those annoying douchebags at your college who only do it to pick up chicks.

But for the rest of us who do have problems, we just wanna listen to this song and have a few beers at the pool and not be bothered with anything else in life. And think about what Spongebob's doing right now.

And, hey, you really know that this is a great song when the Muppets do a cover of it!

Out of all the sketches the Muppet Show had done in its 5 years of existence, this one was one of the few that broke my suspension of disbelief. The show was supposed to be a stage show that was filmed, live audience and everything. But for this sketch to work, the entire building would have to been flooded to support the characters swimming and breathing. Or maybe I'm just overthinking it and it's all just elaborate puppeteering.

What? Puppetry on The Muppet Show? It's a thought so crazy that it just works!

By the way, Sesame Street did a version, too:

I'm gonna assume they did this version before the Muppet Show's. It's easy to see why the Green Anything Muppet got replaced by Kermit and company: Marketability. The Muppets of today wouldn't dare let Generic Muppet #53 star in a Beatles cover in favor of, well, Kermit or maybe even Pepe.

That's it for this entry, see you in July! Have a good 4th of July Weekend, everyone!

To my dear readers: I'm also taking reader submissions for future "Soundtracks For Summer" entries. If you've got an idea, pop me an email at beamingforbunnies@gmail.com OR comment on this entry OR at the Facebook Fan Page OR at my Twitter with the name of the song, and a reason or two why it defines "Summer" for you. You'll be glad you did.

The Greatest Mural Ever

I found this earlier today and just had to share it with the rest of Internetland. The good folks over at Cartoon Brew recently posted this mural:

A high-res version can be found here.
that was painted on the wall of animator Makinita (aka Andres Silva)'s studio. This...is simply incredible. If you're like me, the thought of searching and recognizing each and every cartoon character on there could only be described as orgasmic. Sure, from this size, you easily see Frankenberry, Uncle Fester, Astro, Mighty Mouse, Sgt. Hatred, Mr. Stay-Puft, Kang & Kodos, and the giant from "The Brave Little Tailor."

But for every chracter you recognize, there's at least 10 that you don't. And this awesome, awesome man went obscure. Like...I thought I was the only person who remembered The Brothers Grunt!

Want to see the rest of them? The man himself has provided the following video which focuses on EACH AND EVERY CHARACTER in detail.

It runs about 15 1/2 minutes, but trust me, if you're an animation buff like I am, this is probably the best 15 minutes you'll spend in quite some time.

BTW, try to find the following characters:

-Rat Fink
-Doug Funnie
-Fritz The Cat
-Eek The Cat & Sharky
-The Groovy Ghoulies
-The Bigheads AND the Fatheads from "Rocko's Modern Life"
-Elmo Aardvark (from The Aardvarks)
-Bobbie Generic
-Earthworm Jim
-Cornfed Pig
-Lupin III
-Gorillaz
-Pee-Wee Herman
-The Galaxy Goof-ups
-Bob Oblong

Have fun!

Mmm...Bacon Sundae

Since today is, or rather WAS 4/20 when I started writing this, I decided to celebrate by noshing on some classic stoner food at my local Denny's.

You'd think people didn't WANT to admit they come here.
My only regret for today's quest was not taking a picture of said Denny's. This one's from Virginia, but out of the 17 pictures of Denny's buildings on the internet, this is the one that looked the most like the one I went to. So let's pretend that it is, and if I know my chain restaurant buildings right, it must have been a former Sizzler by the look of the roof there. And trust me, a Denny's replacing a Sizzler is an improvement. A SLIGHT improvement, but an improvement.

But let's get down to business, I was there to partake in Denny's Baconalia, their salute to all things bacon.

Not pictured: The whipped, congealed, and choco-tastic groups
It's really a far cry from the Old Me who used to despise bacon, then apologized for said despising years later. After much deliberating about which part of the pyramid would pour the most crap into my heart, I went with the Triple Bacon Sampler.

There's bacon in the hash browns!
The name of the thing makes it obvious that you get THREE kinds of bacon with the meal: Regular Bacon, Pepper Bacon (essentially Bacon, but with huge flakes of black pepper embedded into it), and Turkey Bacon. They say Turkey Bacon is better for you, but being bacon, it still passes the "rub something against a piece of paper until it turns clear" test as prescribed by good ol' Dr. Nick.

Dr. Nick Riviera: Fellow graduate of Hollywood Upstairs Medical College
If I were to rank the three bacons by personal preference, it would go like this:

1) OG Bacon
2) Turkey Bacon
3) Pepper Bacon

While nothing beats Bacon Classic, the turkey bacon was surprisingly decent. It tasted like the love child of turkey an bacon would taste, with a thick, smooth texture that provided a contrast with the extra-crisp pepper bacon. I'm more of a fan of chewy foods, so I wasn't really impressed with the shrapnel that dug into my gums that I got whenever I bit into the pepper bacon. Also, the overall pepper taste was just too intense for my taste. This wasn't spicy, mind you, but imagine picking up a pepper grinder, opening it up, and biting into a solid peppercorn while having bacon in your mouth. THAT'S what the pepper bacon tasted like.

The dish also came with eggs (quite good, especially since Denny's is the fast-food equivalent of an actual diner), and hash browns that was covered in cheese and more bacon. The pepper bacon aside, it was a pretty good meal which I finished off with the TRUE reason I showed up to the place:

I took the picture. My friend Danny is the one in the frame.
BEHOLD: The Maple Bacon Sundae, something that usually seems reserved for Man V Food or one of those "I'm an idiot for eating this" videos that you see on youtube. I should've been tipped off to the novelty of the whole ordeal when the waiter was all too giddy to hear my order. "Oh, another foolish victim," he probably thought. Indeed, just about everyone in the place was staring at me when I got it. Hell, that guy/lady in the upper left of the picture is looking right at me!

Despite what you may think, this was simply an ordinary sundae. Two scoops of vanilla ice cream, lots of maple syrup, and topped off with whipped cream. Oh, and bacon. You see, some folks like to have nuts or other crunchy things to top their ice cream. Here, it's just like that, only it's bacon instead of almonds. Since you mostly get ice cream in every bite, I mostly tasted the crunch of the bacon. Again, not a fan of getting shived in the mouth by my food, but the ice cream coated the bacon just enough for it to not do too much damage.

Hell, the saltiness and crunch of the bacon provided a good contrast too the sweet and creamy texture to the ice cream. And I'll add that the maple topping was pretty good, but as you can see in the picture, lots of it pooled at the bottom, which gave the inquisitive eater a little science lesson about density. Much like oil/water, it seems that both bacon and ice cream float on maple syrup. After several failed attempts to get maple, bacon, and the ice cream all in one spoonful, it was time to give it up and send for the check.

All in all, the overall dessert was quite good, and I definitely recommend trying it once. I know that I'll probably never touch it again, but I have this blog to record it posterity. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to lie down and have a heart attack.

Sigh

The entire month of March gone without a single post. I have three excuses:

1) There are no excuses
2) I've become addicted to Pokemon White.
3) I'm in one of those "depressed" moods again.

I seem to have lost most of my writing spark. It's mostly due to excuse #'s 2 & 3. I stay up too late playing White or doing some other thing, get up too early for work, then be too tired to give a damn about anything else.

Hell, I'm more active on In 10 Words and my Twitter feed. I still say the Twitter feed is where lots of my good ideas have been going instead.

So, to tide you folks over while I retool my life and such, here's my reaction to playing a 3DS for the first time:

My mind was blown at the moment I registered my name:

Beaming For Bunnies Turns 3!

This past Sunday, an important milestone hit the Internet.

No, not that. The blog turned three years old!!

With the third entry in nearly as many months, I couldn't let this little milestone pass us by! Why haven't I written anything that isn't from In 10 Words? To be perfectly honest, I have no excuse for January. February, on the other hand, is when life actually interfered with online time. Thus, no time for entries dealing how Angry Birds took down a dictator in Egypt over King Tut's Missing Penis or what have you.

But let's get back on topic.

Here's the first entry! (I just re-read it. I still think it's quite good for an introduction.)
Here's the First Birthday! (After reading THAT entry again...I have really grown as a person in the last two years. And I like that.)
and The Second Birthday! (Completely phoned in!)

And for good note: Here's a list of essential entries! And its sequel!

I'll see you in March, everyone! Time to show you some Three-related pictures!

Valentine's Day!

Much like my favorite nostalgia site X-Entertainment, I've been slacking off on any substantial updates. But much like X-E, today is a day for love! Not love for someone in particular, but a love for writing and proving that I'm not dead and/or migrating to Twitter.

Yes, today is Valentine's Day once again, probably my least favorite day of the year. People buying each other expensive heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, crowding all my favorite eateries, and just generally enjoying the company of another person.

How I despise that, and working in a pharmacy-type establishment for the past four years has not helped at all. Hundreds of people rushing in to buy pieces of cardboard with empty gestures written inside them that are simply going to end up in the trash within 48 hours. And then the process repeats next year, or until the next major holiday. Don't you just love consumerism?

On the flip side, some folks like to call this day "Singles Awareness Day," for all the people without a lover who don't leave their curtains closed next door. But I don't like that, either. I'm perfectly aware that I'm single, and I don't need yet another reminder of it, thank you very much.

But don't let my bitterness get in your way of your loving. A new entry with actual substance is in the process of being written, and I'll give you a hint to what it's about!
