Hey folks, last I checked, it's still summer! So you know what that means: Another entry where I blab about a song that reminds me of summer!
Today's song is Robbie Dupree's "Steal Away."
Ah, 1980, such a year to begin a new decade. A feeling of malaise was spreading as the 1970's came to a close, the Keytar won't be invented for another couple of years, and a soothing sound was needed to fill the void. A sound that would tell us "hey, relax."
This is, again, one of those songs that plays in your head when you're relaxing by the pool with some sort of colorful drink with that little umbrella think resting in it. For me, it's a song that reminds me of the time when I was sitting on the porch of a Days Inn in Virginia watching Tropical Storm Gaston (yes, Gaston) pound away at the landscape. Everything around us was getting soaked and battered apart by the wind and rain...except for me. Completely awesome.
Also of note is that this is one of those songs that Jimmy Fallon refers to as "Yacht Rock." As in, soft rock songs such as this one that you listen to on a fancy yacht while drinking champagne and telling your loser friends that you're on a boat, and such.
Another notable "Yacht Rock" song, according to Jimmy is Christopher's Cross' "Ride Like The Wind."
Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself by showing that one. Oh well, either way, I'll see you folks next time!
BTW, I'm also taking reader submissions for future "Soundtracks For Summer" entries. If you've got an idea, pop me an email at beamingforbunnies@gmail.com OR comment on this entry OR at the Facebook Fan Page with the name of the song, and a reason or two why it defines "Summer" for you. You'll be glad you did.
